The Law of Loving what you Do

BookThankYou2

THANK YOU to all the people who sell, buy and read my books.

YOU ARE ALL WONDERFUL

Your encouragement and support has meant the world to me as I travel this independent/self publishing journey. With my soon to be released fifth book ‘Danika and Yatimah in a Race for Rain’ I can’t help thinking about where I’ve been and what’s come and gone in the past couple of decades.
What was I doing twenty years ago? I know for certain it didn’t include writing a book! People still ask me why I began writing and how I came up with my stories and my reply is life, my life. A life full of all the things I love, the things that have tested me and nagged at me until I did something about it.

Tails Carried High was born from this …

Other writers have occasionally asked me, wouldn’t you love to be one of those deep, profound and brilliant writers.

I love the way so and so writes so I’m going to write just like him or her and … Usually I switch off there because the reference to making pots of money comes next. I believe if making money is the main motivation for either writing a book or breeding horses your ideals are skewed and you’re likely to become disheartened very quickly.

As for me, I write to highlight some of my life experiences, so to be profound isn’t a bad goal. I also know I write to entertain, I know my limitations AND I enjoy learning something new. It seems you never stop learning no matter what you do. But one important fact I’ve remembered over the years and that is to be ME. After all I came to novel writing after experiencing half of my life. In other words late-ish in life and I already knew who I was and what my priorities were. I’m like many others, I love horses, reading, nature, fashion, art and people. I am quite fascinated by people hence, maybe, the road to writing. I can be outspoken, determined (you have to be if you want to write or breed horses) and I can spin a pretty good yarn but I’m in no way brilliant. So in actual fact I’ve simply learnt about myself and how to be myself.

One other thing I realised when I was breeding horse’s – I bred the horses I personally loved, so naturally with my writing I take the same path. I create what’s in my heart and characters I love, care about, or even dislike but they are my characters. It’s interesting that in both my horse breeding journey and now my writing journey I always travelled my own path. I’ve never been tempted to do what other breeders do, or do the same as other authors, even if he or she sold a million copies of their book or made a fortune from a specific mating of horses. I know deep inside if it wasn’t my particular pathway, my characters and or my horses it/they wouldn’t be what I envisage them to be. They wouldn’t represent me.

I strongly believe that no matter what you do, if you’re true to yourself and work to develop your own voice/path it will ring loud and true with believability. And in saying this, anything worthwhile never happens overnight. I’ve now written four novels and the fifth is due to be released this year. Fingers crossed another will come out next year.

So my point is, know who you are and what you want and why. Take time to learn from the writers or the horse breeders who inspire you. Learn from the books you love, even the books you don’t understand or don’t like. The same goes for horse breeders. You learn something from every breeder you put under the microscope. Sometimes the something you learn is what not to do. Most of all enjoy every minute you spend writing your book or loving your horses – because if you’re not writing or breeding horses for your enjoyment, maybe you shouldn’t be bothering with either.
