For Thursday Art day we celebrate the Australian Year of the Farmer.

This week out of the morning mist a colourful herd of cattle were mustered to Toowoomba as part of The AustralianYear of the Farmer celebrations. Up to 1,200 cows have been mustered to the outskirts of Toowoomba and they would be the most colourful herd of cattle on the Darling Downs.

No of course they aren’t real cows but cow canvasses that have been decorated by schools, businesses, artists, individuals and even politicians at Parliament House Canberra. I heard on ABC radio that the idea was the inspiration of Darling Downs farmer Phil Blinco, who said that he wanted to draw attention to a new endangered species – the farmer.

He went on to say. “It really got out of hand. I originally intended for about 800 cows to go and now it’s looking to be closer than 1200. The whole idea is designed to try and get people thinking about farmers again.”

All this was also explained me me in great detail by Lindsay at the holding paddock. About 13, Lindsay is a great ambassador for the cause. He directed me to the Year of the Farmer web site http://www.yearofthefarmer.com.au  Facebook www.facebook.com/AustralianYearoftheFarmer   and  Twitter https://twitter.com/AYOF2012

Australian Year of the Farmer is about celebrating and enriching the connections between rural and urban Australia. We want you to take time out of your busy day to think about how farming affects your life, there’s more to this agribusiness than meets the eye. Around 136,000 farms across the country generate more than $405 billion for the Australian economy each year, that’s 27% of our GDP.
The celebration was conceived by Australian Year of the Farmer Directors, Geoff Bell and Philip Bruem in 2010. Geoff and Philip wanted more people to appreciate the fresh food and quality materials our farmers produce to keep us fed, clothed and sheltered. And so, the concept has grown into a national celebration, one which will reach every Australian – reminding us that our farmers sustain the Australian way of life and the economy.
