WISH FOR A PONY- revisiting an old friend for the National Year of Reading.

This weekend for the National Year of Reading, I experienced the thrill of revisiting an old friend!  To explain, while searching my bookcase  for another title I came across my copy of WISH FOR A PONY by Monica Edwards and the child in me insisted I reread the story(yet again) and I’ so glad I did. This book takes me back to my childhood. A childhood full of longing for a pony, the joy and anticipation of owning such a wonderful animal and the dreams that filled my days. ‘Wish for a Pony’ is  every horse loving little girls dream story and to top it off,  it is beautifully illustrated by Anne Bullen.
I love these stories so much. There’s not too much drama, just enough to be believable and it also presses home the old fashioned values of family, friendship and opportunity. It was this type of story, which set me on the road to writing my Danika and Yatimah children’s books.
Below is a short excerpt for you to enjoy.

Illustration by Anne Bullen “Ballerina and Sea Pie coming back.”

“… The girls eyes paid silent homage to the superb white mare coming towards them. She moved like water, fluid and smooth, and she flirted her small hooves on the grassy track, eager for the stable with sweet hay in the rack. It was almost impossible not to watch this perfect combination of splendid horse and graceful rider. Sea Pie, who would have held the eye of any horse lover when not eclipsed by the mare beside him, came collectively on almost completely unnoticed. He was a perfect child’s pony, well mannered, narrow, and with a smooth balanced action. His mane and tail were black, against a warm bay coat. he struck out his little hooves precisely, and carried himself with pride, though he was but thirteen hands and very young.”
